o que Abbas peda, os palestinianos ganham!

Abbas's Loss is Palestinians' Gain

Richard Falk described deferring the report as 'perverse.'

By Sherri Muzher

There is a famous Arabic expression: 'he who doesn't respect himself shall not be respected.'
Apparently, Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas doesn't believe in this. At least, he didn't until now.

The decision to defer the Goldstone Report, the UN report alleging that both Israel and Hamas had committed war crimes during Operation Cast Lead in the Gaza Strip last winter, was nothing short of betrayal. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Richard Falk even described the decision as "perverse."

'The Palestinians have betrayed their own people,' Falk said. 'This was a moment finally when the international community endorsed the allegations of war crimes and it would have been an opportunity to vindicate the struggle of the Palestinian people for their rights under international law.'

Falk continued, "For the Palestinian representatives in the UN themselves to seem to undermine this report is an astonishing development."

Indeed, it was astonishing for Palestinians and those who have supported Palestinian efforts toward justice and freedom for the last 61 years. Human rights, after all, are the cornerstone of the Palestinian struggle. From the right to self-determination to putting an end to the economic sanctions imposed on civilians, modern Palestinian history has consisted of one Israeli transgression after another.

This makes the decision to defer the Goldstone Report all the more perplexing. Rather than think of the landmark Goldstone Report as being about war crimes and accountability, it will represent a very sad chapter in Palestinian history. Equal to the Hamas takeover in Gaza where the first internal Palestinian bloodletting took place, this incident has crossed a privately understood red line.

It's been said that Abbas was pressured to defer the report, but even if this were so, it is irrelevant. A president is elected to represent the interests of his or her people at home and abroad, not the interests of others. This is true of every nation, including the USA. It appears that Abbas did not take his leadership responsibility seriously. He clearly did not have his finger on the pulse of the people because had he known what the Palestinians were saying and feeling, he would not have been as shocked at the post- reaction.

There are upsides to all of this, however.

First, is the unprecedented and unified opposition of Palestinians. Neither faction affiliation nor religion nor gender has made a scintilla of difference in opposing this deferment. The unity is very much welcome in an era of political exploitation in the Middle East. This exploitation has not only played a role in preventing a Fateh-Hamas reconciliation -- something which the people have demanded, both in Palestine and in the Diaspora -- but it has also prolonged the ineffective leadership currently in place in the West Bank.

More than 30 Palestinian organizations in Europe alone have called for Abbas to step down saying his position towards the report gave Israel a cover-up for its war crimes. In general, a conversation with a Palestinian from the Diaspora reveals a sort of universal disgust with the Palestinian leadership. There are also questions asking why Abbas is so fearful of outside pressure that he was willing to turn his back on the very principles that put the Palestinian cause on the map, in the first place.

The second upside is that the Palestinian people have re-captured their rebellious spirit on a grassroots level, not seen since the 1987-1993 intifada.

And while Hamas might be enjoying this scandal, they should not take it as vindication of their ineffective leadership style in Gaza. This is about the heart and soul of the 61-year-old Palestinian struggle with Israel.

A third upside is that Palestinian leaders from all factions have been put on notice that the Palestinian people demand loyalty and accountability. Throughout modern history in the Middle East, the citizens in Arab countries have essentially accepted the brutal tyrannies they live under; those who dare to change the status quo are often imprisoned. Perhaps, the unanimous outrage in Palestine will inspire others to take back their country.A final upside is that the Goldstone Report will have generated even far greater publicity than what might have been.

Countless UN resolutions have been introduced and swept under the rug; this is one UN report that will never be swept under the rug not only because of its unprecedented importance but also because of the significance for internal Palestinian politics -- politics that affect Israel and all nations involved in the "peace process."

The famous civil rights activist Dominique de Menil once articulated that, ?What should move us to action is human dignity: the inalienable dignity of the oppressed, but also the dignity of each of us. We lose dignity if we tolerate the intolerable?

Wise words. Common sense words. Words which can be applied to so many crises around the world and especially to the Palestinian cause.

So why can?t Palestinians like Abbas remember this, instead preferring to save their own hides and cheapen Palestinian blood in the process?

uma terceira intifada no caminho

Tensions Mount Again at Al-Aqsa: A Third Intifada?

By Jonathan Cook - Nazareth

Tension over control of the Haram al Sharif compound of mosques in Jerusalem's Old City has reached a pitch unseen since clashes at the site sparked the second intifada nine years ago.

Ten days of intermittently bloody clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces in Jerusalem culminated yesterday in warnings by Palestinian officials that Israel was "sparking a fire" in the city. Israel's Jerusalem Post newspaper similarly wondered whether a third intifada was imminent.

Israel, meanwhile, deployed 20,000 police to safeguard the annual Jerusalem march, which was reported to have attracted a crowd of 70,000 passing through sensitive Palestinian neighbourhoods close to the Old City.

The ostensible cause of friction is Israel's religious holidays that have brought Jewish worshippers to the Western Wall, located next to the Haram al Sharif and traditionally considered the holiest site in Judaism. The wall is the only remnant of the Jewish temple destroyed by Herod in AD70.

At a deeper level for Palestinians, however, the ease with which Jews can access sites in and around Jerusalem, while the city is off-limits to the vast majority of Palestinians, highlights the extent to which Palestinian control over Jerusalem and its holy places has been eroded by four decades of occupation.

That point was reinforced on Sunday when the gates to the mosque compound were shut by Israeli police, who cited safety concerns for 30,000 Jews praying at the Western Wall for Succot.

Jerusalem's police chief, Aharon Franco, also incensed Palestinians on Monday by castigating them for being "ungrateful" after Israel had allowed them to pray at Al Aqsa during Ramadan.

In fact, only a small proportion of Palestinians can reach the mosque. Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza cannot get past Israel's separation wall, and the 1.5 million Palestinians in Israel and Jerusalem are finding it harder to pray there. This week police have been allowing only women and Palestinian men with Israeli identification cards showing they are aged at least 50 to enter.

Both the Palestinian Authority and Jordan issued statements this week warning that Jewish groups, including extremists who want to blow up the mosques, should be prevented from entering the Haram.

It was in this context that the leader of the Islamic Movement inside Israel, Sheikh Raed Salah, called on Israel's Palestinian citizens to "shield the [Al Aqsa] mosque with their bodies".

Concerned that most Palestnians can no longer access the mosques, Salah has taken it on himself to campaign against Israeli moves under the banner "Al-Aqsa is in danger", urging Israel's Palestinian minority to protect the mosques by increasing their visits and ensuring a strong Islamic presence at the site.

In a further provocation by Israel yesterday, Salah was arrested on suspicion of incitement and sedition. A judge released him a few hours later but only on condition that he stay away from Jerusalem.

Palestinian concerns about Israeli intentions towards the Haram are not without foundation. Israel's religious and secular leaders have been staking an ever-stronger claim to sovereignty over the compound since the occupation began, despite an original agreement to leave control with Islamic authorities.

On the ground that has been reflected in Israel's efforts to reshape the geography of the city.

It began with the hasty razing of a Muslim neighbourhood next to the Western Wall that was home to 1,000 Palestinians. In place of the homes a huge prayer plaza was created.

Next a ring of Jewish settlements were built separating East Jerusalem from the West Bank, and more recently Jewish extremists have been taking over Palestinian neighbourhoods just outside the Old City, such as Sheikh Jarrah, Ras al-Amud and Silwan.

With official backing, Jewish settlers have also been confiscating and buying Palestinian homes in the Old City's Muslim Quarter, including next to the mosques, to establish armed encampments.

They have also been assisted by Israeli archeologists in digging extensively under the quarter. Tensions over the excavations escalated dramatically in 1996 when Benjamin Netanyahu, prime minister then as now, approved the opening of the Western Wall tunnels under the mosques. In the ensuing violence, at least 70 Palestinians were killed.

In addition, Israeli officials and rabbis have been redefining the significance in Jewish religious thought of the compound, or Temple Mount as it is known to Jews.

The rabbinical consensus since the Middle Ages has been that Jews are forbidden from entering the compound for fear of desecrating the site of the temple's inner sanctum, whose location is unknown. Instead religious Jews are supposed to venerate the site but not to visit it or seek to possess it in any way.

That view has been shifting since a wave of religious nationalism was unleashed by the seemingly miraculous nature of Israel's victory in the Six-Day war. As the Israeli army captured the Old City in 1967, for example, its chief rabbi, Shlomo Goren, rushed to the Haram to read from the Bible and blow a ram's horn, as the ancient temple priests had once done.

At the Camp David talks with the Palestinians in 2000, Ehud Barak, the Israeli prime minister at the time, demanded - against all Jewish teachings - that the whole compound be declared the "Holy of Holies", a status reserved for the temple's inner sanctum. His adviser Moshe Amirav said Barak had used this precondition to "blow up" the negotiations.

The Camp David failure led to an explosion of violence at the Haram al-Sharif a few months later that triggered the second intifada.

Islamic sovereignty was challenged again in 2003 when Israeli police unilaterally decided to open the compound to non-Muslims. In practice, this has given messianic cults, who want the mosques destroyed to make way for a third temple, access under police protection.

It was precisely rumours that Jewish extremists had entered the compound on the eve of Judaism's holiest day, Yom Kippur, that provided the spark for the latest round of clashes.

It is reported that a growing number of settler rabbis want the injunction against Jews praying at the compound lifted, adding to Palestinian fears that Israeli officials, rabbis, settlers and fundamentalists are conspiring to engineer a final takeover of the Haram al Sharif.

desconstruir a narrativa israelita

Deconstructing the Israeli Narrative

Distracting the world community permits Israel to continue its illegal maneuvers.

By Dan Lieberman

As Israel's democratic posture becomes more questioned, its mystique becomes more exaggerated. To prove the validity of its actions, Israel's supporters focus on three components of Israel's drive to an accomplished nation:

The significance of the Zionist mission, Israel as a Jewish state, and Israel not being responsible for the Palestinian displaced persons.

All of these issues, which had roles in establishing the Israel state, are expressed with sweeping generalities, devoid of specifics and facts. Obfuscation, lack of clarity and an assumption that what is being related is correct often characterize discussions of these issues. No questions asked and nothing to explain.

Evidence contradicts the narratives that Israel's supporters work diligently to create.

Before constructing a base for Middle East peace, it is essential to deconstruct the spurious Israeli narratives.

The Zionists portray themselves as a vanguard of Jewish thought and aspiration, leading the masses of Jewish people to freedom and fulfilling the promises denied to them by an adversarial world. History contradicts these portrayals, especially that of Zionism as a mass movement by the Jewish people. Zionist philosophy had little appeal to the Jewish people in the late 19th century.

"The first Zionist Congress (1887) was to have taken place in Munich, Germany. However, due to considerable opposition by the local community leadership, both Orthodox and Reform, it was decided to transfer the proceedings to Basle, Switzerland.

Reform Judaism in a series of proclamations, which culminated in the 1885 Pittsburgh Conference, rejected the Zionist program (Note: Overturned in 1999 by contemporary Reform Judaism):

"We consider ourselves no longer a nation, but a religious community; and we therefore expect neither a return to Palestine, nor a sacrificial worship under the sons of Aaron, nor the restoration of any of the laws concerning a Jewish state."

The 19th century emancipation movements liberated West and Middle European Jews and permitted them to integrate into European society.

"Jews emerged as writers of secular literature, enriching English, French, and German literature with novels, short stories, poems, and essays. In Britain Benjamin Disraeli, who converted to Christianity, wrote popular novels before becoming prime minister. Heinrich Heine, who converted to Christianity in order to earn a law degree in Germany, became one of the best-loved German poets."

The Zionist agenda evidently preferred Disraeli to remain Jewish and not become Britain's Prime Minister. Jews rejected this agenda, which they perceived as prompting nations to question the loyalty of their Jewish citizens, as serving to impede their advances, and as reinforcing a race-baiting theory that Jews engaged in international conspiracies. Anti-Zionist Rabbis insisted: "Zion exists everywhere but in Zion."

Examine the Russian Jews. They had significantly more problems than other European Jews. Nevertheless, they didn't consider Zionism as a relief for their difficulties. Between 1881 and 1914, 2.5 million Jews migrated from Russia-1.7 million to America, 500,000 to Western Europe, and almost 300,000 to other nations. Until 1914, only a mere 30,000 - 50,000 Russian Jews followed the Zionist call to Palestine and 15,000 of them eventually returned to Russia.

So, if not for Zionism, how did the Israel state arrive and swell into millions of inhabitants?

By 1914, Zionism had become a stagnant adventure. Somehow, and in some way, someone took advantage of the Allies victory in World War I to promote the Balfour Declaration, which approved "a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine." The League of Nations' certification of the British mandate in Palestine prevented the formation of a national Palestinian governing body and many English speaking European Jews came to work in the British administration Fly below the cloud of propaganda and rhetoric and the principal result of the original Zionist agenda is easily observed: People of uncertain circumstance (not dedicated Zionists) and favored by the Zionists have been transferred from their countries to a new land, while people of more certain circumstances and not favored by the Zionists have been displaced from their lands. The less favored have become refugees and, in many cases, been reduced to poverty.

The Jews who immigrated to Israel immediately after 1948 arrived for mainly economic and political reasons and not to fulfill a Zionist mission. Israel even claims the massive number of immigrants from North Africa and the Middle East (Mizrahi) did not arrive voluntarily, but were forced out of their homes. Zionism has not persuaded a great number of Jews to leave their western nations, not deterred them from greatly participating in their nations' economic and social gains and not prevented them from integrating themselves into their nations' cultures. The Economist (Jan.11, 2007) mentions that only 17% of American Jews regard themselves as pro-Zionist and only 57% say that "caring about Israel is a very important part of being Jewish."

In the last decades, Russians from the former Soviet Union, most of whom preferred to migrate to the United States, have been the principal immigrants to Israel. Many of them are dubious Jews or lost their Jewish roots during the Communist era. Orthodox Jews, who came for religious reasons and not to join their secular compatriots in common pursuits, are the fastest growing segment of the Israeli Jewish population. Where they settle, the secular Jews tend to leave. More aligned with Rabbis preaching mystical nineteenth century philosophies, these orthodox Jews isolate themselves from their fellow Israelis and from worldwide Jewry..

The dubious Zionists created a dubious Jewish state.

The Jewish State

By what authority did Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu proclaim, "The Palestinians must recognize Israel as the state of the Jewish people," and "Jerusalem is the united capital of the State of Israel and the Jewish people?"

The Jewish people don't have a central authority and no referendum of its 15 millions has been taken. PM Netanyahu might not care, but many Jews fear that their fellow citizens might one day ask: "You have a country, what are you doing here?" or suggest that Jews are more loyal to a foreign nation and are working for that nation.

It is difficult to characterize Israel as a Jewish nation. Avraham Burg, former Knesset speaker and former head of the Jewish Agency has been quoted as saying, "to define the State of Israel as a Jewish state is the key to its end." The term 'Jewish nation' has never been adequately defined and there is nothing exceptional in Israel that identifies a specific Jewish morality, culture or Judaic atmosphere

The cool and breezy manner in which the Israelis express the words 'Jewish state' intends to create a comfortable feeling; nothing hostile towards anyone, just a satisfactory note to Jewish citizens. Cause for alarm is abundant. Israel has no written constitution. Its laws discriminate against its minorities and separate its citizens.

  • The entire Jewish population left Nazareth many years ago and established a new Nazareth. The new Nazareth receives substantial benefits from the government and has grown prosperous and modern. The old Arab Nazareth remains old.
  • In Haifa, the Arab population lives by the sea. The Jewish population lives in the hills.
  • Few Palestinians have been able to rent housing or buy property in West Jerusalem.
  • In Acre, immigrant Jews are able to acquire property but are not allowed to sell the property to Arab citizens.
  • Tel Aviv has contiguous populations but not mixed populations.
  • Few, if any Arabs, have been able to purchase government sponsored housing.
  • The separation of populations results in the separation of activities, recreation centers, schools and education
  • Although some Arabs are able to obtain college scholarships, the large majority of college scholarships require previous military duty. Since Arabs are not allowed to serve in the Israeli army, few Arabs can obtain college scholarships.
  • Arabs don't obtain many housing loans.
  • The state of Israel owns more than 90 percent of the land. Non-Jewish citizens cannot, except in rare occasions, purchase land.
  • Whenever the Israeli army wants to construct a military base, Arab property is expropriated for the endeavor.
  • Since marriages are performed by a rabbi, a Jew cannot marry a non-Jew within the boundaries of Israel.

Separation of ethnicities is most apparent in how Israel and most of the world differ in regarding nationality. It's not just separation. It's a de facto apartheid, which the words 'Jewish state' will tend to reinforce.

All Americans have both United States citizenship and nationality. Israelis have Israeli citizenship, but don't have an Israeli nationality. Israel's citizens have either Jewish, Arab, Druze, Samaritan, Circassian, Kara'ite or foreign nationality. Jewish nationals already have overwhelming preference in the Israeli state, Defining Israel as a Jewish state seems ominous; only an attempt to give some meaning to the preference, and reinforce it to an extent that being non-Jewish means you might as well leave.

Add to the dangerous mix of laws, which favor the favored nationals, the declarations of Israel's leaders. According to the Jewish Daily Forward, March 18, 2009, "Foreign Secretary Avigdor Lieberman was elected to the Knesset on a platform that would require a loyalty oath as a condition of Israeli citizenship. He has suggested transferring Israeli-Arab population centers to the control of a future Palestinian state."

Israel today is a nation whose people have conditions, problems, purposes and values that are different from Jews around the world. The Israeli characteristics aren't derivatives of a three thousand year-old part urban and part tribal society - but are associated with a specific 21st century industrial society. The specifics create an Israeli identity that is not aligned with the identities of Jews in other nations. Israel is attempting to make all Jews into good Israelis and redefine the meaning of being Jewish. This includes being agreeable to Fundamentalist Christianity, which is not agreeable to world Jewry, but is Israel's best friend. Israel is strengthening a fervent antagonist of Jewish and progressive peoples.

Recall the conclusion of the King-Crane commission, which was appointed by President Wilson in 1919:

"...a national home for the Jewish people is not equivalent to making Palestine into a Jewish State; nor can the erection of such a Jewish State be accomplished without the gravest trespass upon the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine. The fact came out repeatedly in the Commission's conference with Jewish representatives that the Zionists looked forward to a practically complete dispossession of the present non-Jewish inhabitants of Palestine, by various forms of purchase.

In view of all these considerations, and with a deep sense of sympathy for the Jewish cause, the Commissioners feel bound to recommend that only a greatly reduced Zionist program be attempted by the Peace Conference, and even that, only very gradually initiated. This would have to mean that Jewish immigration should be definitely limited, and that the project for making Palestine distinctly a Jewish commonwealth should be given up."

Israelis also make it seem that the route to the 'Jewish state' was a natural progression; disregarding their roles in creating the Palestinian displaced persons and the evictions of almost one million Palestinians from their lands.

The Displaced Persons

Israel did not permit Palestinians who left or were evicted during the 1948 and 1967 conflagrations to return to their homes and lands. Assets, businesses, property and household items were confiscated and the owners were not reimbursed. Israeli historian Benny Morris summarized the evictions well:

"I feel sympathy for the Palestinian people, which truly underwent a hard tragedy. I feel sympathy for the refugees themselves. But if the desire to establish a Jewish state here is legitimate, there was no other choice. It was impossible to leave a large fifth column in the country. From the moment the Yishuv was attacked by the Palestinians and afterward by the Arab states, there was no choice but to expel the Palestinian population. To uproot it in the course of war."

Benny Morris used the correct phrase: ". if the desire to establish a Jewish state here is legitimate." It was not legitimate. The choice was not between "having a Jewish state and not dispossessing the Palestinians." The choice was between "not having the expanded state that Israel gained" and "dispossessing the Palestinians." Almost all the evicted Palestinians were in the territory granted to the Palestinians. Not since the days of American expansionism has a group of individuals (Israel was not even a declared nation when the confiscations began nor had Arab armies attacked at that time.) invaded another land, seized the territory and cleared the area of the indigenous people.

Can anyone believe that Israel is not directly responsible for the Palestinian exodus? Did these people voluntarily decide to leave their homes, face starvation, have entire families commit suicide because of their desperation and then be willing to sit quietly in refugee camps? Are these verified reports of forced removals, terrorizing killings and destruction of more than 400 Palestinian villages only stories? Why were the villages destroyed? Why weren't the villagers allowed to return? Why were vacant homes instantly occupied? In Rwanda, Bosnia, Kosovo and elsewhere, the western nations were firm in demanding prompt return of refugees and fought to achieve that demand. In other situations, refugees had been created, but wanton property and asset seizures were not a rule. In Palestine, Israel seized all properties and assets and allowed newly arrived foreigners to occupy vacant homes. No precedent for these illegal operations exists in the post World War II western civilized world. We have perpetrators telling victims; "Look it's over, let's forget it. You want restitution; it isn't going to happen."

Israel has revealed its nature; a nation built on actions normally termed war crimes by world institutions; a nation that does not follow international law; and a nation that does not heed United Nations Resolutions. Distracting and deceiving the world community with contrived and fallacious narratives permits Israel to continue its illegal maneuvers. Setting the record straight will straighten the road to Middle East peace.

A lei é clara.

fonte: Viva a Palestina

fonte: Somos Todos Palestinos

If You Can't Beat Hamas...

Hamas can't be beaten. Obama shouldn't join it, but he may have no choice to work with it.

By James Gundun

While the international community shuttles from one meeting to the next, jets from one city to the next, Gazans idle their time or keep their minds distracted from the past and future. Pushing 50% unemployment, they haven't felt the winds of change in President Obama's push for a two-state solution, not the slightest breeze.

Though he insists Hamas is fully to blame, he's in no position to deny that blackballing Hamas is partly Israel's doing. Imagine if Obama reconsidered a dialogue with "terrorists" or spoke a single word about the UN's Gaza report at the Security Council - every last trace of his Jerusalem support would vanish. But evidence is mounting that Obama is on the wrong side of the inevitable.

Hamas can't be beaten. Obviously President Obama shouldn't join it, but he may have no choice to work with it.

Heading into their eighth negotiating round with Egypt, Hamas and Fatah are expected to sign a reconciliation agreement later this month specifying elections, political prisoner exchanges, and Palestinian security forces. Skepticism surrounds the talks given how intractable each side appears, but the language from both sides has been universally positive, a rarity in the Middle East.

"We handed the Egyptians a very positive response before Id al-Fitr," Abdullah Abdullah, a Fatah legislator, said. "We are prepared to reach understandings with all the Palestinian groups over the points mentioned in the plan, and not only with Hamas."

Mohammad Dahlan, leader of Fatah in Gaza, tempered expectations but added, 'Meshaal's language was flexible and positive.' In fact no one was more upbeat that Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal, who met with Egypt's Intelligence Director Omar Suleiman on Monday.

'Our meeting was extremely positive,' Meshaal said. 'We tackled many issues pertaining to this proposal and we think this proposal is a good basis to achieve Palestinian reconciliation.. We have responded to the spirit of this document and examined all of its components and our Egyptian friends listened to our opinions.'

Elections are being penciled in for June 2010 and will eventually be held even if they stall once or twice. Ready or not, President Obama must start preparing to engage Hamas either individually or collectively. Tearing it down hasn't and isn't going to work.

Hamas may never again reach the popularity it experienced in 2006 when it captured 45% of the electoral lists to Fatah's 41%. But despite Israel and America?s best efforts to marginalize Hamas, the latest International Peace Insitute (IPI) poll found that Fatah holds about 45% of the parliamentary vote, with 24% going to Hamas and the rest undecided. Hamas Prime Minister Ismail

Haniyeh holds a 32% approval, not very attractive until considering Abbas at 55%. The IPI predicts, when factoring indecision and independents, that Abbas would defeat Haniyeh head to head 'with a fairly narrow majority of 52%.'

Other polls have reached similar conclusions over the last two years. The general picture of Palestinians is about 50% support Fatah, 25% support Hamas, and the remaining 25% are waiting to see which way the wind blows. Factor in those who would favor Hamas if it responds positively to reconciliation and it could have a third of Palestinians, enough to ensure Hamas remains a permanent fixture in the Middle East whether it wins big or under performs.

President Obama and Israel have no chance of marginalizing Hamas through wars, blockades, diplomatic exclusion, or military and economic support for the Fatah. Their only hope is advancing the peace process and robbing Hamas of its cause to resist. Otherwise stalled negotiations play right into Hamas's hands, who is using the delay to reposition itself as a necessary component of Palestinian statehood and champion the resistance in the face of Israeli obstinacy.

Attempting to capture the spirit of hope for himself, Haniyeh said reconciliation, 'is what we expect and is what we hope for. It is very possible to sign, to end the division, to restore national unity and to attend to national causes.'

Then Israel, who has feasted on Palestinian division, would really be in trouble. It seems so logical for Israel to propose a settlement freeze and get the ball rolling, to progress the two-state solution before Hamas triumphantly returns, to take its foot off of Palestine's neck and counterattack Hamas' rally cry against Israeli oppression. It seems logical that President Obama would pressure Israel into compromise, fight the Gaza blockade, and improve relations with Hamas, a party he'll be forced to work with in the near future.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit recently said, 'Eventually, we're sure that we will manage to bring the Palestinians together.'

Unfortunately logic often breaks down in the Middle East and in the strangest of worlds, opposing the Gaza blockade equates to opposing the Israeli people. In the strangest of worlds Israel blackballs Hamas from the international community, attempts to divide and conquer Palestinians, then drives them together through provocation.

Yom Kippur is the holiest Jewish holiday, but that didn't stop Israeli security forces from storming the Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem to protect Israeli worshipers. Accounts vary and each side has its legitimate claims, but the timing couldn't be worse. Muslim states pounced on Israel, from Egypt to Lebanon to Jordan to the UAE to Iran, impaling its support of the peace process, and the language of Hamas and Fatah seemed to merge afterward.

'Providing a police escort for settlers who are against peace at all costs, and whose presence is deliberately designed to provoke a reaction, are not the actions of someone who is committed to peace,' said lead Palestinian negotiator Saeb Ereket.

Mohammad Dahlan warned, 'A Third Intifada may erupt in reaction to the Israeli disrespect of the feelings of Muslims and the storming by extreme Jewish groups of the al-Aqsa mosque.'

As if following the script of a play, Meshaal called on the PA, 'to stop the security cooperation and give more consideration to armed resistance against the occupation.' He warned America and Europe not to, 'misread the current silence in Palestine. There is fire under the ashes.'

Herein lie President Obama's choices. He can continue to let Israel act unilaterally and with impunity in the West Bank and Gaza - and risk a Third Intifada. He can continue to let Israel dominate the peace process and control who America negotiates with - and risk a Third Intifada. The path least headed towards a Third Intifada is objective handling of Israel and engagement with Hamas, ironic as that may seem to America. 2010 could catapult Hamas back into the West Bank and the peace process, at which point exclusion will no longer be possible.

President Obama cant beat Hamas, but if he doesn't act proactively it can beat him.

Patrick Henry's call
Miko Peled writing from Kibbutz Zikkim, Live from Palestine, 28 September 2009

A scene from The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.

Forty-eight hours after I landed, the reality of this land, a land that some like to call holy, began taking its toll on me.

The movie The Boy in the Striped Pajamas came to mind as I played with my kids in the pool of Kibbutz Zikkim, a beautiful pastoral little kibbutz or agricultural commune, on the Mediterranean coast just a stone's throw from Gaza. The film features an innocent German boy by the name of Bruno growing up across the fence from a concentration camp. The German boy whose father is the commander of the camp is completely oblivious to the reality beyond the fence and is forbidden by his mother from exploring the backyard. But while Bruno's mother naively believes the "farm" to be an internment camp, her husband has sworn under oath never to reveal that it is in fact an extermination camp specifically designed to help the Nazis achieve their horrific "Final Solution." Eventually defying his mother's rules and venturing out beyond the backyard, Bruno arrives at a barbed wire fence to find a young boy just his age emptying rubble from a wheel barrel. That boy, obviously a prisoner at the camp, was wears striped pajamas.

For Israelis this narrative is a frightening one, but sadly they have plunged themselves into a reality where this narrative is being replayed but with a new cast. This time Israelis are living across the fence from Gaza, but unlike the German family in the movie they are not oblivious to what goes on in the camp. For the most part Israelis are not only aware of the horrors that take place in the concentration camp near them, they see it as justified.

It's only been six months since my last visit here, just as Israel was preparing to launch its latest sadistic terror attack on the civilian population of Gaza, a population whose average age is 15.5, a population of innocent children. I visited Zikkim then because after all, it is the home of my in-laws, the place where my wife was born and raised.

In this chauvinistic state created by my forefathers the terror attack on Gaza is called a war. It is much easier that way for consciences to bear. After all, fighting an enemy that possesses tanks and war planes, artillery and sophisticated weapons, smart bombs and air to air missiles, along with anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons, is a great deal more heroic than massacring innocent children, women and men who are defenseless, have no means of escape and no means of fighting back. But of course the reality is that the Israeli army, that cruel military force that has made a name for itself during the last 60 years as a force to be reckoned with, is in fact no more than a shameless army of cowards lead by a junta of brutal racists.

Instead of the patronizing call we constantly hear for a Palestinian Gandhi, one would hope to see the emergence of international support for a Palestinian Patrick Henry. The call "Give me liberty or give me death" awakens strong emotions even today, more than 320 yeas after Patrick Henry gave the speech that crystallized perhaps more than any the American colonies' call for independence from the English crown.

There has never been, nor is it likely, an occupying power that would ever relinquish its domination willingly. Israel is no different. Not only is Israel unlikely to end its iron rule over Palestine and its people, it is concentrating all of its effort on making Greater Israel a permanent and irreversible reality.

However, while Patrick Henry's was a call for arms, in the case of the Palestinian struggle the call should be for a more sophisticated and more effective national struggle. There is nothing Israel likes better than a military confrontation, and the Israeli "security" forces go out of their way to blame Palestinians for initiating violence so as to justify their own brutality. But a violent struggle only helps the oppressor and it is in fact a statement of despair.

Three clear goals on which the struggle would do well to focus could be as follows:
1. Granting all Palestinians full equal rights with Israelis.
2. Granting Palestinians unrestricted freedom of movement within Israel/Palestine.
3. Reigning in the Israeli forces and withdrawing them from population centers.
Until these conditions are met, Palestinians have no reason to negotiate or cooperate with the Israeli authorities. Until they are met there needs to be a concerted effort to isolate Israel and to initiate a struggle that defies its laws and undermines its authority. Israel profits greatly from Palestinians who are forced to apply and pay for permits and licenses; Israel profits from Palestinians who are forced to buy Israeli products. The Israeli Haaretz newspaper recently reported on the huge profits that Israeli farmers and government agents make as a result of the siege imposed on Gaza. An effort can focus on the idea also made famous during the American Revolution that there can be no taxation without representation, calling for defiance of the Israeli authorities and a boycott of Israeli products and goods.

Those who still believe in a negotiated settlement with Israel on the basis of two states should read the following lines from Patrick Henry's famous speech: "It is natural for men to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth ... Are we disposed to be of the number of those who having eyes, see not, and having ears, hear not ..."

In the long-run, the best possible outcome for Israelis and Palestinians is a pluralistic democracy where individuals' rights are protected by a constitution and the rule of law. Israelis and Palestinians, by virtue of their sharing a homeland, are fellow countrymen. As such they are deserving of the same rights and share the same responsibilities. Their first responsibility is to engage in a struggle to bring an end to the apartheid regime that holds them both in a seemingly endless struggle, and to cooperate as equals for a better future.

A NEGAÇÃO começou no primeiro momento.
