Hatim Abdul-Qader, an advisor to president Mahmoud Abbas, Shaher Saad, secretary-general of the Palestinian Workers Union, and several officials and representatives of workers groups participated in the procession, in addition to representatives of American, Norwegian and Italian unions.
Saad stated that the Workers Union chose Jerusalem as the starting point for Mayday celebrations in order to stress on the Palestinian determination and steadfastness regardless of the illegal Israeli measures and the strict closure imposed on the city.
He addressed the Palestinian workers and the workers of the world and said that the Palestinians are marking Mayday from Mount Olive, from the heart of the Palestinian capital under occupation, to challenge the Israeli destruction of Palestinian homes in the city and to challenge the ongoing construction of illegal settlements.
Furthermore, Saad said that there can be no peace and no stability in the region without establishing a contiguous Palestinian State with Jerusalem as its capital.
He stated that the illegal Israeli violations and attacks increased unemployment and poverty in the Palestinian territories, especially in the Gaza Strip as unemployment rates in Gaza are now more than %80 while poverty rates jumped to over %65.
Saad also said that %75 of the families of Palestinian workers depend on humanitarian aid.
Several speakers, including lawyers and representatives of human rights groups, stated that Palestinian workers are subjected to ongoing Israeli violations, attacks, and hundreds of them were repeatedly imprisoned by Israel in addition to being subjected to mistreatment by some Israeli employers.
